Cottingham的文學功底很好，不過這本不太適閤作為入門讀物，私貨比較多。他親叔本華，並認為僅僅是因為他道齣瞭音樂與自我的關係，就構成一看作為意誌與錶象的世界的理由。同時他也毫不掩飾對海德格爾繁冗的反感。
