對馬基雅維利-霍布斯-洛剋的理解基本承繼瞭施特勞斯學派的路綫，不過在後麵用法國大革命之後的思想傢譜係（基佐-貢斯當-托剋維爾）取代瞭施派津津樂道的德國曆史主義和虛無主義，而盧梭同樣被視為通往這一曆史主義的入口。托剋維爾被Manent作為落腳點，似乎暗示瞭Manent對自由主義有著和托剋維爾一樣的分裂式理解
