这本小说给我两个意外，一是创作缘起，Doerr说，2004年他在纽约地铁上看见一位在打电话的乘客因手机失去信号而很生气，他想到我们是不是忘记了能这样和远方的人通话是一种奇迹，于是他决定创作一部重现无线电广播对上世纪二三十年代的人而言是一种怎样的奇迹的作品；二是小说的写法，所有章节短得出奇，几乎没有一个章超过10页，虽然乍看是一本超过500页的厚小说，读起来却毫无压力，而作者坦承这是为了亲近读者a gesture of friendliness，让读者在高度凝练绵密诗意的行文中有休息的空隙。文学不该迎合读者，但文学作品写出来是希望被阅读被用来交流，这是我最喜爱钦佩的创作态度。
