Louie is an eighth grade girl in her last year at a small private school. She has always loved Tommy, the disheveled blue-eyed blond, who smiles out of the side of his mouth. When her best friend Darcy starts dating him, she is understandably upset. Darcy has an eating disorder, and falls into a coma after fainting on the stairs at school. Tommy starts to show interest in Louie, and she is faced with trying to do the right thing. There is a new eighth grade teacher this year, who requires the students to write a journal entry each morning. This is how we hear the original, funny and honest voice of Louie. With the support of her friends, and large family, she gets through the year realizing that friendship is the most important thing, even when the cutest boy in the class is trying to kiss you.
