The narrator finds threads which run from an abandoned bridge over the River Blyth to the terrible dowager Empress Tzu Hsi and the silk industry in Norwich. "Sebald," as The New Yorker stated, "weaves his tale together with a complexity and historical sweep that easily encompasses both truth and fiction." 開年讀的第一本好書！Mesmerizing, fascinating, and inspiring. One of today's best prose works with a wide coverage ranging from China's last dynasty, silk industry in Germany and France, British Empire's Rise and Fall, to writers like Conrad, Swinburne, Edward FitzGerald. The tone alternates between compassion and satire. Highly recommended!
