From School Library Journal Grade 1-3-- Benjamin outlines Tubman's life, with an emphasis on her childhood as a slave, the head injury she received as a teenager trying to help another slave, her work as the ``Moses'' of her people, and her role in later years as a spokesperson for women's rights. Worked into the biographical information is reference to the harsh living conditions the slaves endured, as well as the workings of the Underground Railroad. The full-color illustrations enhance the events in Tubman's life and give a sense of the times. Pocahontas traces the life of the Indian princess from her days as a carefree young girl through her role as a liaison and peacemaker between the white settlers and her people to her death at age 21. The characterization of Pocahontas as a strong, contributing woman of her time comes through not only in the text but also in the illustrations. Written with a sense of story, both books will appeal to beginning readers and serve as useful research tools. --Cheryl Cufari, N. A. Walbran Elem .
