The role of artists in the context of urban environments is becoming ever more central to both art practice and urban planning. Using the recent regeneration of the notoriously deprived neighbourhood of Glasgow's Gorbals as a starting point, Arcade: Artists and Place-making looks at the issues surrounding urban public art and raises significant questions about its place and value in the twenty-first century. A range of essays, analyzes and diaristic accounts examine the work of artists such as Monika Sosnowska, Ross Birrell, Kenny Hunter, and Daphne Wright, and architects such as Page and Park and CZWG (including a foreword by Piers Gough CBE), assessing their impact on the community and environment of the Gorbals. Various issues that arose during the project are explored in depth, including the interactions between artists, architects and society, the legacy of Basil Spence's high-rise blocks and their subsequent demolition, the preservation of cultural memory and dialect, and the ambivalent relationships between people and places. These topics and the conclusions that are reached are of far-reaching significance to the sectors of public art and urban redevelopment.
