主角们拥有能够引发或者消解地震的能力，读完前几章会感觉是个类似 X-MEN 的「少数群体」故事。好在这感觉没持续太久，主线以 POV 的形式迅速展开又收拢，最后稳稳抛出一个 hook，举重若轻地告诉读者，「你看，这是关于他们，也是关于我们的，奴役与自由的故事。」

设定比较有意思的奇幻三部曲之首部，从三个视角讲了个动不动就发生地质灾害毁天灭地的星球上的恩恩怨怨。基本上，普通人惧怕能操纵能量的orogenes（有点类似普通人类和mutants的关系），暴露身份的后者大部分早夭或者被送去“培训学校”，在受监管的条件下学会使用自己的能力，成为安抚这颗爱玩火山喷发的星球的武器。自然，有人对这种命运安排是有意见的。这系列大概算是末世和反乌托邦的混合体——书一开头就说“世界再一次终结了，这也是最后一次”，而且很快就提到这个世界的居民是有几种限定的“职业规划”的，并且职业名称是每个人全名的一部分。第一部里发生的故事并不多，三个叙述视角的汇合点挺有意思，文笔比普通YA还是好些的。
