A new historical period has been added to the seemingly inexhaustible UXL Reference Library series: the era of Elizabeth 1 (1533-1603) in England. This accessible set consists of three volumes: Almanac, which offers chapter-length essays on political, social, and cultural events and movements that shaped each era; Biographies, in-depth treatments of luminaries who represent various levels of society and diverse experiences and viewpoints; and Primary Sources, collections of facsimiles and excerpted documents that attempt to provide insights into the past for the series' intended audience. The new topic will support both social studies and literature research assignments and will be welcomed by secondary library media collections.
The series offers several user-friendly features. All primary sources volumes include 18 selections (both print selections including speeches, legislation, poems, etc., and illustrations such as political cartoons, maps, and theater plans). These are introduced by explanatory material and a bulleted list of brief descriptions of social and political conditions that establish historical context. Documents are followed by "Did you know" sections containing peripheral facts and "Consider the following" sections listing several queries or suggestions for study. Technical vocabulary and period references are defined in outer margins, adjacent to the original text. All volumes offer numerous inserts and sidebars, black-and-white illustrations, archival photos, and reproductions, all with detailed captions. Individual entry bibliographies are divided into lists of print and online resources. A reader's guide, time lines, glossaries, comprehensive "Where to Learn More" resource lists, and volume-specific indexes are also provided. Additionally, the set comes with a paperback cumulative index.
This balanced treatment assumes no previous knowledge, provides ample background information, offers engaging and manageable overviews, and serves as an accessible starting place for assignments. It is also available as a e-book and should be considered standard fare for school and public library collections that serve middle- and high-school students. Kathleen McBroom
