He is the author, most recently, of "Why Time Flies: A Mostly Scientific Investigation." Alan's first book, "Out of Eden: An Odyssey of Ecological Invasion," was a finalist for the 2005 National Book Award in nonfiction and won the Overseas Press Club award for environmental reporting.
