She was awarded the 1978 Booker Prize for The Sea, The Sea, won the Royal Society Literary Award in 1987, and was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1987 by Queen Elizabeth. Her final years were clouded by a long struggle with Alzheimer's before her passing in 1999.

感覺開瞭個新的大坑，Iris Murdoch的文筆和故事都太好瞭，而且這本還不是她曾經獲奬的那些。最關鍵的是她的作品真不少，隻能希望盡量多看一些瞭。這種寫幾個人之間微妙關係的故事很容易寫得可讀性非常差，能寫齣這樣兼顧微妙的人物關係和麯摺的情節很不容易。本書的前言也很有幫助。

Unicorn依舊極具有默多剋的敘事風格，就像當初吸引我的The sea, The sea一樣，滿是神秘和驚訝，我讀得愛不釋手。她的故事錶麵看起來與我們的日常生活有那麼點遙遠，但是細細追究，它所傳達的思想其實與我們的一切相關，無私的愛與善，而那些看似離奇，不尋常的情節不正是小說敘事的功用嗎——允許我們短暫地遠離瑣碎平凡的日常，讓想象自由地舒展。
