和作者成名作The Lottery相比，雖然情節和篇幅大不相同，但還是有不少似曾相識的地方——同樣的新英格蘭小鎮，同樣是鎮上的人們行使著"多數的暴政"，同樣讓人細思極恐。

讀的第二本Shirley Jackson，免不瞭覺得時代滾滾，1916年齣生的女作傢筆下的哥特小說，真的不太能勾起共鳴。Shirley真的過分喜愛心理描寫，在The Haunting of Hillhouse裏也是，無時不刻的心理描寫，淌得像漏水的池子——遠不及因此改編的Netflix劇集。當然我也反思瞭一下，是不是因為畢竟是個異鄉人，所以念這樣的英文原版恐怖故事，有點像外國人看僵屍，摸不著頭腦？也許是，也許不是。之後多念幾本恐怖小說試試看。
