Their daily life and the tools and techniques of their trade are fully described and revealed in beautiful, detailed illustrations. Though Tuckanucket itself is fictional, it is typical of the harbor towns that developed with the whaling industry. The fortunes of these towns and their citizens rose and fell like the tide, affected not only by changes in the whaling business but also by storms, fires, and war.
