For as long as Anthony can remember it's been just him and his mom. His mother told Anthony that his father died in the war in Europe before Anthony was born. Although he has sometimes wondered what it would be like to have a father, Anthony has never really missed anything a dad would have brought to the family. He's always been able to count on his mom for everything.Now someone is sending Anthony expensive presents. They're not from his mother. They're not from his friends Naimah, Elizabeth, Tayesha, or Eddie -- the other junior high school students who, along with Anthony, make up the NEATE group.Then a well-dressed man comes to Anthony's school, and Anthony is shocked to meet his father. it is he who has been sending the presents Suddenly Anthony has to deal with two new realities: his father's sudden appearance and his mother's lie.Meanwhile, Eddie is having his own problems with his father. An altercation between black and white students threatens to explode into racial conflict unless something is done. Naimah, as president of the student council, sets out to save DuSable from impending conflict.
