Michelangelo Antonioni's "L'avventura" has been seen by some as one of the greatest masterpieces of European art cinema, although it baffled its first audience in Cannes in 1960. This study provides a detailed account of the film arguing that in order to appreciate its greatness it is necessary to understand not only that the film is a classic but also that is was a revolution in cinema.
