Together with Renoir and Degas, Claude Monet was one of the organizers of the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874. Considering Impressionism a national French style, Monet painted such diverse subjects as urban scenes, still life's, landscapes, seascapes, and nature studies, including his famed gardens of Giverny. By the time of his death in 1926, Monet's works were famous throughout the world, and their influence helped shape the direction of painting in the twentieth century.
