Tills BOOK GREW out of my need to have a comprehensive
system fi)r viewing some of the ways tile mind and body
interface. In my work as a psychologist and gerontologist,
and n my priva e life 1 am persistently confronted with the
challenge of understanding how pelsonal grow h, charac-
ter, physical structure, and health/dis-ease relate to one
another. Before completing tile research out of which this
book emerged. I did not feel that there existed a system
that could do this in a Ilolistic and clear f~lshion that would
be functional lor therapists and lay people alike. In lact,
beyond the somatotyping system developed by Sheldon,L
the kinesic interpretation system devised by Birdwhistell
and his colleagues,2 and he complex therapeutic-analysis
systems o "Re ch~ and Lowen ~ there have been t o rehably
effective means fi)r interrelating these crucially important
aspects of our lives. It would even seem tha many of our
medica|, educational, religious, and philosophical inst!tu-
tions base their working philosophies on the assumption
