The capability of modern seismic systems to monitor incremental coseismic stress and strain within a rockmass makes the early detection of instabilities a real possibility. The collection and interpretation of real-time seismic data is therefore of extreme importance in both underground and open-cast mining as well as in tunnelling. This book brings together an international team of geophysicists and geotechnical engineers to describe the latest developments in the field of quantitative monitoring and interpretation of seismic activity in mines. It describes the recommended methodologies and procedures, giving examples, and the emphasis throughout is on practical application to real problems. The aim of this book is to provide a textbook for those involved with seismic monitoring in mines, irrespective of the type of mine or rock, and to bridge the gap between seismologists and rock mechanics practitioners. It is written with the mining environment in mind, but its content is also applicable to other situations where seismic activity is of specific concern.
