Geotechnical risk analyses are implemented at all phases of tunnel construction: from decisions made about design, such as the comparison of possible alternatives; during construction, as a means of establishing safety procedures; and post-construction, when developing plans for maintenance and repair. An analysis of geotechnical risk involves a group of studies which lead to the identification and evaluation of the risks of the potential probability of error and the consequences of its occurrence. Owners, designers, contractors and insurers agree that geotechnical works in general, and tunnels in particular, have a high degree of risk that needs to be assessed and managed. Tunnels and underground works intersect and interact with natural materials, incorporating their characteristics as structural components of their own stability. This interaction is much more significant than in many other civil engineering projects. Since natural rock mass is a potential source of enormous parameter variability, and since parameter variability in this context is not directly controllable, it is obvious that the assessment and management of risk, at every step, are virtually imperative for such projects. This volume addresses the risks present in subterranean works from various perspectives, such as construction and safety, financing and control, and exploration and maintenance. The contributions from eminent specialists discuss risk assessment and management based both on advanced theoretical concepts and on practical experience. "Geotechnical Risk in Rock Tunnels" is a highly relevant contribution to the fundamental area of Geotechnical Risk assessment, management and control. The book is of interest to all those involved in the planning, construction and management of tunnels: entrepreneurs, designers, consultants and contractors.
