There has been widespread public concern about the effects of nitrate, particularly derived from agricultural fertilizers, on water quality and public health. However, much of the popular literature is confusing and a primary purpose of this book is to clarify our scientific knowledge of the relationship between nitrate, agriculture and the environment. The author argues that public concern has been out of proportion to the real threat posed by nitrate. He explains in an accessible way: Why nitrate fertilizer is necessary and how it is made; How nitrate escapes from arable and grassland systems; The problems nitrate can cause when it escapes in the environment; How nitrate affects human health; Political and economic aspects; What "risk" means and how it is best managed How we can come to terms with nitrate; The book builds upon an earlier work. Farming, Fertilizers and the Nitrate Problem (CABI, 1991), cowritten by Dr Addiscott.
