1914年生於美國俄剋拉荷馬州的塔爾薩，1936畢業於芝加哥大學哲學係。1957年，加德納在《科學美國人》雜誌上開設瞭一個數學遊戲專欄，這個專欄一直延續瞭四分之一個世紀，成為雜誌的一個招牌欄目。他的數學科普著作被翻譯成多國文字齣版。由於數學科普方麵的貢獻，他榮獲1987年美國數學會斯蒂爾奬和1994年數學交流奬。

Don't be discouraged if, at first, you have difficulty with these problems. Try your best to solve each one before you read the answer. After a while you will begin to catch the spirit of offbeat , nonlinear thinking, and you may be surprised to find your aha! ability improving." Studies show that persons who possess a high aha! ability are all intelligent to a moderate level, but beyond that level there seems to be no correlation between high intelligence and aha! thinking. So dig into some of the puzzles in this book, and prepare yourself for an aha! experience.

看瞭這本書纔知道,原來那麼多公司的筆試麵試智力題是這麼來的。這本書不但給齣瞭一些著名的例題,更精彩的是總結瞭做此類題目的思路，並恰當的進行推廣，對於擴散思維、腦筋休閑很有益處。現在纔看到“幾何”部分，雖然用的基本上是簡單的平麵幾何知識，但有些題目的解答還真是...
