Debbie Ford, author of The Dark Side Of The Light Chasers (Riverhead Trade Paperbacks, June, 1999), draws her unique talent and insight from personal in-depth studies of transformation and human potential.
Her work as a coach, teacher, consultant and integral faculty member of The Chopra Center For Well Being in La Jolla, California, has opened the hearts of thousands, bringing them the gift of self-love and emotional freedom.
In Debbie’s search for her own healing, she explored psychotherapy and hypnosis, participated in dozens of workshops and seminars, and spent time in rehabilitation centers and 12-step programs. Her goal was to rid herself of the parts of her being that seem to keep her from fulfilling her dreams and finding wholeness.
Debbie’s healing took a quantum leap after gaining a profound understanding of Deepak Chopra’s description of the holographic universe. Through this shift she discovered that to become whole, she needed to approach her healing in a new way.
She learned that rather than trying to get rid of or suppress negative traits to become whole, she needed to first identify these unlovable traits and then find the gift in each one. By inventing specific techniques, unique to her workshop The Shadow Process, Debbie was finally able to embrace and love all of herself.
This shift in her perception changed her life so remarkably that she decided to commit her life to sharing these insights through books, personal training and leading workshops nationwide. Debbie teaches people how to make peace with their “shadow or dark side.”
Debbie is a graduate of JFK University in psychology with an emphasis in consciousness studies. She lives in La Jolla with her son Beau.
Debbie Ford believes that we each hold within us a trace of every human characteristic that exists, the capacity for every human emotion. We are born with the ability to express this entire spectrum of characteristics. But, Ford points out, our families and our society send us strong messages about which ones are good and bad. So when certain impulses arise, we deny them instead of confronting them, giving them a healthy voice, then letting them go. It is to these feelings that Ford turns our attention, these parts of our selves that don't fit the personae we have created for the rest of the world. She shows us the effects of living in the dark, of keeping all our supposedly unsavory impulses under wraps. We find ourselves disproportionately frustrated and angry at the selfishness of friends, the laziness of colleagues, the arrogance of siblings. When we are unable to reconcile similar impulses in ourselves, Ford explains, we waste our own energy judging others instead of empathizing. But most important, we deny ourselves the power and freedom of living authentically. Through the stories and exercises in The Dark Side of the Light Chasers, Debbie Ford shows us not only how to recognize our hidden emotions, but also how to find the gifts they offer us. The very impulses we most fear may be the key to what is lacking in our lives.
