This title presents the experiences of Scottish soldiers during the Second World War in their own words, from the brutal hardships suffered by General Slim's 'forgotten' 14th Army as it fought its way through Burma to the large scale onslaught of the D-Day landings to the deprivations of the Siege of Malta, from the retreat of the British Expeditionary Force and capture at Dunkirk to Churchill's ill-fated Norwegian expedition and assault on Narvic. Wherever the British Army fought, Scots could be found shouldering their share of the hardship and the fighting. This book charts the course of the Second World War through the testimony of those Scots who were there. Using remarkable new first-hand testimony collected by the author from interviews with surviving veterans as well as material collected from the diaries and letters never before been published, the author focuses on the accounts of those Scots who served in all theatres of war and in all services. Over 50,000 Scottish servicemen and women died during World War Two and, by highlighting the experiences of those Scots who survived, this book serves as a reminder of the sacrifice of those who did not.
