This volume provides a detailed analysis of the raid and its consequences, uncovering the truth behind this most famous clandestine attack of the twentieth century. During World War 2 the German battleship Tirpitz, apparently safe in its Norwegian anchorages, was a significant threat to Allied shipping. If the Artic convoys were not to be seriously disrupted, the Tirpitz had to be destroyed. In September 1943 the Royal Navy launched an audacious raid against the battleship using six midget submarines. Despite heavy casualties in the flotilla, two submarines managed to lay mines against the warship's hull, disabling it for six months. For the raid, two VCs were awarded, as well as several other awards. The Tirpitz was finally finished off later in 1944 by air attacks.
