(小排長就是被作者的講座“蠱惑”去的ROTC) 從boot camp入手，講述九十年代中期3086排從recruits到成為馬潤的過程。中間穿插馬潤的文化介紹（洗腦（。），訓練方式的演變與比較，以及在美國政治環境和國際形勢下的地位的思考。看到recruits的變化成長真覺得蠻雞血上腦吹爆馬潤的，不過離開帕裏斯島後還是被現實層層擊垮。最後一章缺乏知識儲備看得有點纍…

心理學領域也少見的對樣本大規模又有針對性的縱嚮追蹤，時間的大跨度、對個體追蹤的細緻、引用的恰到好處、各章節主題的突顯、和全書內容的推進布局全都非常難得。看這本期間還在同步閱讀古希臘相關的書籍，所以更能明顯體會到斯巴達城邦（尤其是重步兵方陣）中的諸多元素與USMC的部分理念的奇妙對應，也更能理解一個古典學專業看過這本之後的激動和衝動瞭。這本書寫在9/11之前，所以第8章多是對和平時代軍隊定位和軍人身份的討論，很好奇之後的論述又有怎樣的改變；讀這本書又是在麵對各州BLM運動三軍上書拒絕鎮暴並且Gen. Mattis也公開站隊之後，所以第9章關於陸戰隊在美國本土“作戰”的論題也期待會有新的討論，要是還能有章after afterward就好瞭。

97年的書，買的十周年紀念版，讀到十分之一被作者如此冷靜的筆調震撼得無話可說。我們對軍隊的所有想象源於我們對自己人生的無力感、對組織與紀律與榜樣的盲目憧憬……身份與國傢的羈絆最終成為普通人在軍隊中試圖去強行聯係起來的“夢想”與“野心”，感覺很悲傷。
