Rigging the Wind, by Jennifer Barber, won the $1,000 Kore Press First Book Award 2002, as judged by the distinguised author Jane Miller. The poems in Rigging the Wind deal with the closeness of relationships, but also the surprising isolation, and even danger, they can bring. Ms. Barber drew on her own marriage and family relationships, as well as the time that she spent amongst those in Galicia, Spain, who still remember the way neighbors and regions were torn apart by the Spanish Civil war.
