Robert Plomin is Professor of Behavioural Genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience at King's College London. He previously held positions at the University of Colorado Boulder and Pennsylvania State University. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and of the British Academy for his twin studies and his groundbreaking work in behavioral genetics. He is the author or coauthor of many books, including G is for Genes: The Impact of Genetics on Education and Achievement (with Kathryn Asbury).

A century of genetic research shows that DNA differences inherited from our parents are the consistent life-long sources of our psychological individuality—the blueprint that makes us who we are. This, says Plomin, is a game changer.

Plomin has been working on these issues for almost fifty years, conducting longitudinal studies of twins and adoptees. He reports that genetics explains more of the psychological differences among people than all other factors combined. Genetics accounts for fifty percent of psychological differences—not just mental health and school achievement but all psychological traits, from personality to intellectual abilities. Nature, not nurture is what makes us who we are.

Plomin explores the implications of this, drawing some provocative conclusions—among them that parenting styles don't really affect children's outcomes once genetics is taken into effect. Neither tiger mothers nor attachment parenting affects children's ability to get into Harvard. After describing why DNA matters, Plomin explains what DNA does, offering readers a unique insider's view of the exciting synergies that came from combining genetics and psychology.

3.5星，本书应该算是“一命二运三风水”的科学版解释了。基因不仅决定了我们的身高体重，还决定了我们学习能力、性格、心理状态，以及各种可能的遗传病。虽然外界环境能带来短期的影响与改变，但最终，我们仍然会回到基因指定的道路上。就此躺平吗？不是的。作者指出，基因只是界定了“我们是谁”，但不能预测出“我们将会怎样”；小范围内尽可能努力，大方向上就，随遇而安吧。找到适合自己的路就好。貌似有点鸡汤，但接受自己，也是人生的一大学问吧。契合当前热点，我们在掌握更多基因的密码与技术之后，会给“平等”带来什么挑战，我们将何去何从。
