After graduating from Monash University (Melbourne, Australia) in 1985 with an honours degree in Graphic Communication, Tony Palmer has worked as a book designer for various publishers. Currently he is the Executive Designer at Penguin Random House. He has also been a part-time design teacher at Victoria University, RMIT University and Monash University where he is currently undertaking a PhD in Art and Design focusing on the design practice of Chinese language typesetting.

The Practice of Chinese Typography is published in four short volumes: Volume One – Typefaces, Volume Two – Type Sizes and Line Spacing, Volume Three – Letter Spacing and Punctuation, and Volume Four – Layout. These four volumes form a progressive collection of typographic practice that guide a reader through the process of constructing complete Chinese language layouts.
