牛顿（纽特）·阿蒂米斯·菲多·斯卡曼生于1897年。在他母亲的鼓励和支持下，他对神奇动物产生了兴趣。他母亲曾对饲养品种珍奇的鹰头马身有翼兽充满热情。从霍格沃茨魔法学校毕业之后，斯卡曼先生进入魔法部，在神奇生物管理控制司工作。他先在家养小精灵重新安置办公室待了两年，他称这两年是“枯燥之极”的两年，随后被调到了动物所。斯卡曼具有丰富的关于神奇怪兽的知识，因此他在动物所提升很快。

1947年，差不多由他一手成立了狼人登记处，不过，他说他最引以为豪的还是1965年获得通过的那道《禁止为实验目的而喂养》的禁令。这道禁令有效地遏止了不列颠境内创造新的不可驯服的动物的盛行。斯卡曼先生曾在火龙研究与限制局工作，有很多机会远涉异域。在这期间，他为他这部畅销世界的作品《神奇的动物在哪里》收集了大量资料，现在这本书已经是第五十二版了。

由于纽特·斯卡曼对神奇动物研究即神奇动物学方面的贡献，他在1979年被授予梅林爵士团二级主人魔法师的称号。斯卡曼先生现在已经退休，和他的妻子波乐蓬蒂娜以及他的三只宠物猫狸子：霍比、米丽和莫勒生活在英国多塞特郡。
