He's the author of The Power Broker (1974), for which he won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize. It's a biography of Robert Moses, an urban planner and leading builder of New York City. President Obama said that he read the biography when he was 22 years old and that the book "mesmerized" him. Obama said, "I'm sure it helped to shape how I think about politics."

Caro has also written four biographies on Lyndon Johnson, including The Path to Power (1982), Means of Ascent (1990), and Master of the Senate (2002), and The Passage of Power (2012), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award. He's at work on a fifth and final volume about Lyndon Johnson, which he says will take him a few more years still.

语言偏口语，简洁易懂，配有声书看，三五天就能看完。作者新闻科班出书，但不想只输出事实，便转向调查类新闻。书中回忆录的成分远多于新闻挖掘与写作的具体技巧，更像是作者两部主要作品的导读。一是the power broker二是lyndon johnson五卷传记(最后一卷还在写)。写的是人，展现则是权力的游戏。

Caro一辈子基本上就写了两本书，《The Power Broker》和一套四卷的《The Years of Lyndon Johnson》，但光靠这两本书就已经留名青史，拿了两次普利策，现在83岁了还在写约翰逊的第五卷。单从选篇来看，这种几篇长文加访谈的内容选编相对一般，但Caro在里面对他两本作品的自述实在太棒了，不仅说到了实质性的非虚构写作技巧还有一个作家在完成自己作品的过程中应有的雄心和挑战。几篇回忆录性质的长文，讲述他怎样遇到Robert Gottlieb以及在Allen room里受教于一众美国非虚构写作大拿，轶闻和热血奇飞，也非常值得一读。
