信息量颇大，近代以来较重要的德国作家基本都有提及。从社会阶层分析的视角出发，围绕资产阶级和官僚这两个阶层、两种气质，串起德国文学史的发展历程。比较注重英国文学和社会对德国的影响（毕竟作者是英国人）。对作家作品的评价上，作者体现出西方自由主义的立场，且比较重视作家对社会现实问题的关注，在对尼采、黑塞等人的评价上体现较明显。个人认为作者统一的评价视角有时忽略了某些作家的独特贡献，当然由于篇幅所限恐怕也难以面面俱到。社会结构和思想史视角本身颇有新意（虽然有些概括和评价可以商榷），对《浮士德》等具体作品的分析也时有洞见。但作为导论总觉得有点......容易让读者的思路被限制？

我非常反对就作品和作家强调知人论世。一切脱离文本的社会情况分析都是耍流氓。本以为只有中国国内教材有这个问题，不想OUP也落此泥淖。当然关于Protestant崛起和三十年战争后德国社会现实的分析有独到之处，而且很适用于当下中国。英国文学的影响被高估。我爱歌德的成长小说。
