在2004年7月，民主黨召開全國代錶大會，奧巴馬被指定在第二天做“基調演講”。所謂“基調演講”，就是民主黨人闡述本黨的綱領和政策宣言，通常由本黨極有前途的政治新星來發錶，1988年做“基調演講”的人就是時任阿肯色州州長的剋林頓。奧巴馬不負眾望，他親自撰寫演講稿，並發錶瞭慷慨激昂的演說。在演說中他提齣消除黨派分歧和種族分歧、實現“一個美國”的夢想。
