And the Band Played On

兰迪•希尔茨（Randy Shilts，1951—1994），1980年代初第一批意识到艾滋病问题的美国记者之一。1975年，他以优异的成绩毕业于新闻专业，但作为出柜的同性恋者，在当时报社和电视台的恐同环境下难以找到全职工作。做了几年自由记者之后，1981年，他进入 《旧金山纪事报》，成为国内新闻记者，也是全职报道艾滋病的首位记者。他一直致力于艾滋病报道，包括医学、社会、政治影响方面，他的作品因极具叙事性、将个人故事与政治和社会报道交织在一起而备受赞誉，因此，他被誉为“同性恋生活的杰出的编年史作家和同性恋问题的发言人”。1988年，希尔茨荣获美国新闻工作者和作家协会颁发的杰出作者奖。1999年，纽约大学新闻系将希尔茨的1981年至1985年的艾滋病报道评为“美国20世纪新闻作品100强”的第44位。在写作本书期间，他接受了艾滋病检测，并要求医生在他写完之前不要告诉他结果，以免影响他的客观判断。在把稿件交给出版商的当天，他被告知艾滋病病毒阳性，在服用抗艾滋病药物AZT几年后，1994年死于艾滋病并发症。
