Bruno Ernst is a pseudonym of Hans de Rijk, who was a teacher of mathematics and physics in Amersfoort (in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands). He was born in 1926 on Rotterdam and had spent 26 yers of his life in a monastery. Then he rejected the monk calling, married and started to teach children in mathematics and physics. Many years he had been directing the publishing of educational magazines for children. He wrote more than one hundred books and articles about astronomy, photography, history of writing and calligraphy. Although, he was not a specialist in any of these fields, he was a talanted popularizer of scientific results by various sceintists.
He wrote a book about impossible figures "Adventures with impossible figures" and a book about mathematical art of his fellow countryman M.C. Escher "Magic mirror of M.C. Escher".
Escher's work refuses to be pigeonholed. Scientific, psychological, or aesthetic criteria alone cannot do it justice. The questions remain. Why did he create the pictures? How did he construct them? What preliminary studies were necessary before he could arrive at the final version? And how are the various images Escher created interrelated? This book, complete with biographical data, 250 illustrations, and explications of mathematical problems, offers answers to these and many other questions, and is an authentic source text of the first order.
