From School Library Journal Grade 8-12 Paris MacKenzie is an independent and brash 16-year-old American visiting her namesake city at the turn of the century. In this fourth book in the series, she helps her friend Violette with a test run of Violette's experimental diving bell. They recover a trunk which is the first clue to the theft of a priceless 50-carat diamond, Napoleon's Fist. The trail leads to Violette's aunt, Madame Meduse, a former enemy of Paris', and eventually to Paris' father. The fast-moving plot returns the diamond to the Louvre, exposes Meduse's involvement with the Fist as a way to buy Violette into the French scientific community, and reveals Violette and Paris as half-sisters. Readers will find plenty of action and some romance; many period details reinforced by pen-and-ink drawings place this a notch above the usual paperback series. Although much easier than Doyle's writing, there are hints of Holmes and his amazing deductive powers. Paris is the most liberated sleuth to appear in a series in a long while.
