From School Library Journal Gr 6-9 Students needing a brief overview of the achievements of the 36 governmental personalities or 29 sports figures covered in these 2 volumes will be well-served. The chapters range from six to ten pages in length, and information is clearly presented with relevant dates noted. Each article is illustrated with photographs or prints. In each case the author has written an introduction explaining how he or she chose the subjects for inclusion. American Government covers 15 presidents; assorted congressmen, senators, and Supreme Court justices; 3 cabinet members; a first lady; and Benjamin Franklin. Entries are grouped in chronological order; a chronology of world events and a bibliography complete the presentation. Sports is arranged in alphabetical order, with a second contents page arranged by sport and another listing showing period of greatest achievement. Half represent the period from 1960 to the present, but only 3 are still major figures actively competing. In both books, the authors have presented rounded portraits of their subjects, covering problems as well as accomplishments. While the Fabers' book will be of use primarily for reports, Sullivan's will probably have browsing appeal. Alert readers may also spot the one major error in the chapter on Bob Mathias, who is not the ``only athlete to have won the Olympic decathlon twice.''
