The title is exaggerated mogul-speak, and numerous characters in this book about the pop-rock music industry actually say things like, "Sweetie, baby, they ll love you." Such artificial reassurances are mild complements to the booze, drugs, and variant sex that are used to bolster insecure young talent in this sleazy tale of show business ups and downs. The message woven through several story lines is that stardom begets decadence begets failure. The players are so unlikable, however, that the reader doesn t care. Even the graphic descriptions of several performers downfalls are monotonous. This first novel by a former music industry executive is a disgraceful story badly told. Will Hepfer, SUNY at Buffalo Libs.
