From Preface, "This is not the first work to be addressed to the concept of matrimony in Milton, nor, considering its limitations, could one wish it to be the last. It is mainly concerned with a special question-the extent to which the ideal of matrimony in Milton's divorce tracts is embodied in Paradise Lost. But it also attempts to reveal in what way Milton's tracts accept, deny, modify, or exploit popular, and especially "Puritan," notions of the marriage relationship. Close attention is paid to the wavering correspondences between word and concept in the practical literature of marriage, the best surviving indication of popular attitudes. Such a study of Milton's tracts against the popular background has implications for the reading of Paradise Lost, since one has learned before approaching the poem both Milton's explicit theoretical positions in the ethical controversy which lay behind the passages dealing with marriage and something of the spirit in which those passages must have been received by Milton's audience.

除了最后一章外每章讲婚姻问题的一个方面，先引述同时代courtesy book作家和清教、国教关于婚姻的观点，最后论述弥尔顿与这些论点的同异。中心的论点是相较于一般的世俗和宗教作家（甚至是清教徒），弥尔顿对婚姻中精神和谐的强调显得异常激进。最后一章专讲失乐园如何体现弥尔顿的婚姻观，中心论点是虽然弥尔顿关于离婚的政论性文章难以得到同时代英国人的认同，但是他在诗歌中对这些观点的处理更为自然隐微，更容易为人接受。总的来说持平扎实的一本小书，间或有精彩的地方。
