At the center of the novel is Bertrand de Roujay,
the free Frenchman of the title, a Catholic aristocrat
and civil servant who joins de Gaulle in London
when France falls. His adventures in Lisbon, Lon-
don, Yorkshire and Algiers are interspersed with
the contrasting, and often tragic, experiences of
his family and friends who remained in France.
The cast of characters is huge; spies, priests, crimi-
nals, civil servants, nuns, academics, politicians,
soldiers, prostitutes and policemen crowd these
pages, all of them so clearly etched that they
become unforgettable.
