This publication provides
general information regarding
the skin and various skin
conditions. It is by no means
complete or a substitute for
veterinary care. The cause of a
pet s skin problem is often
difficult, if not impossible, to
determine without performing
diagnostic tests and/or
monitoring response to
treatment. In some patients,
more than one disease may be
causing a problem.
Infections and other
diseases may come and go
with therapy or sometimes
due to other factors.
Additionally, a normal test
result at one time does not
mean that the disease will not
be, or was not, present at a
different time. Reevaluations
by a veterinarian may reveal
different symptoms of the
same disease or the presence
of a new disease. It is
important to differentiate
these two possibilities from
the third possibility, which is
treatment failure.
With many chronic and
incurable diseases, several
different treatment options
may be attempted before
finding one that works for
each individual. If symptoms
are due to an unusual,
chronic, or difficult-to-manage
disease, your veterinarian
may recommend that your pet
see a veterinary
dermatologist. A board-
certified veterinary
dermatologist has received a
minimum of t, vo to three years
of additiOnal training after
completing veterinary school,
and successfully completed
examinations administered by
the American College of
Veterinary Dermatology. At
the time of this publication
there were approximately 104
of these board-certified
specialists in the world. Many
of these vetrinarians work at a
veterinary school, but an
increasing number can be
found in private practice.
