From Booklist Gr. 7^-12. As usual, Gay has really done her homework, the result being this stellar example of an information book--insightful, well researched, and intellectually stimulating. Calling on child development experts for opinions and assembling a host of carefully chosen examples and personal comments, she offers a positive yet realistic look at what it's like growing up with a mixed-race background. Her wide-angle perspective touches on cultural, historical, and political aspects of the subject, ranging from the current controversy surrounding transracial adoptions to racial pigeonholing and the work of activist organizations devoted to supporting and informing multiracial individuals. Gay certainly recognizes the discrimination, but she puts it in balance, emphasizing that race is only a part of what makes an individual "who I am." Positive, supportive, and informative, all rolled into one, the book is marred only by its cramped, unappealing internal design. Directory of interracial support groups; chapter notes; bibliography.
