1. AS THE NEW CENTURY OPENED
Henrietta Szold, commenting on the closing year of the
nineteenth century, remarked in the American Jewish Year
Book (If) that the Jews were parting with that year, and
that century, with no regrets. The strides made by anti-
Semitism in the second half of the nineteenth century had
belied the hopes and ideals its first half had produced. In
the next Year Book (Ill), the first year of the twentieth
century was described as having been marked in outstanding
fashion by the work of the ICA (the Jewish Colonization
Association) and by the appearance of the initial volume
of The Jewish Encyclopedia. The work of the ICA was
acclaimed as "bearing within itself the possibility of far-
reaching influence upon the future of the Jewish People
as long as the world may endure." The Encyclopedia was
hailed as the product of great scholarship, and a sign of
the awakening cultural interest of the American Jew. Events
were to prove the writer overoptimistic on every count.
The twentieth century was to outdo the nineteenth in anti-
Semitism. Agricultural colonization was, indeed, to have
far-reaching influence; but in Palestine rather than in the
lands of the diaspora. The Jewish Encyclopedia proved to be
an important work; but infinitely much more labor would
have to be undertaken to arouse any considerable interest
among the Jews in their cultural heritage.
