From Library Journal In this directory, professional geologist Crawford lists the 1300 Superfund sites that as the worst pollution sites in the country collectively form the National Priorities List (NPL). The introduction contains a good history of the Superfund, created by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act to deal with these sites; types of sites (e.g., landfills, military, industrial); and a readable discussion of compounds found at sites and how they affect our health. Arranged alphabetically by state, each site entry briefly describes location, history, type of contamination, number of people threatened, parties responsible for the contamination, legal actions taken, and sources for more detailed information. All sites are identified on a state map. The primary sources for this work are the annual state reports, entitled Progress at NPL Sites (PNPLS). The PNPLS citation is usually followed by the local EPA repository, usually the nearest public library or town hall, that has a complete set of records for the site. An index of sites by name is especially useful. Used in conjunction with the section on hazardous waste in Statistical Record of the Environment (Gale, 1997. 4th ed.), this work would serve all library patrons interested in environmental issues.?Eva Lautemann, DeKalb Coll.
