Introduction
This book is for you, me, and each of us who wants more out
of our work than just a 9-to-5 routine. It is the product of my ex-
periences in the radically changing workplace over the past two
decades, as well as the work I have done with clients as a career con-
sultant to facilitate their journey to career satisfaction.
It began when I was in college studying psychology and picked
up an excerpt of a book by Daniel Yankelovich about the quest for
fulfillment at work. That article struck a chord with me, since even
at that early stage in my life I had worked in jobs that were fun--
and others that were not so enjoyable. I had noticed that some peo-
ple truly enjoy their work, and others just put up with it. Was it
really true that there was a massive trend away from just working
day after day with one eye on the clock and the other on retirement?
Did other people besides me really want to be fulfilled in their work,
and to accomplish something in their life?
I had sensed since I was a child that my life had a purpose --a
mission, if you will--and that there was something important for me
to do. I knew intuitively that it had something to do with my work.
But for many years I did not know what my purpose was.
My life wove its path through various kinds of jobs, many years
of education and ultimately law school, and many different spiritual
teachings. Throughout this process of education, jobs, and relation-
ships, I continued to seek my purpose. And I discovered that others
were on a similar quest.
Then, just three years ago, while I was in the midst of practic-
ing law and working on my personal growth, the awareness of my
purpose became clear. I was to assist in the transformation of the
