HOW TO USE THIS HAGGADAH
This is a parlicipalory Seder fi0r use with small children al a family Seder,
or in religious or secular school setting. You will find your 9 puppets to cut
out inside the back cover of this hook. 1 have designed this book with
preparation sleps and aelivitles with the purpnse of bj-inging the ancient
and thri ng story of the Exodus lo life for the smallesl children and their
families. There are a few preparations beyond the preparation of the
ceremonial foods and the meal because I want to involve the young chikl in
preparations and at the Seder.
PREPARATION OF THE PUPPETS
1. Finish the puppets on pages I I4A-I.
~ Take the puppels out of the book ahmg the perb3rations. (Adult help
needed.)
~ Color the puppets with pencils, crayons, or markers. Add ribbons or
glitter or sequins. This part of the preparation is where much learning can
take place. My son and 1 had long discussions about which puppets were
Moses mother, sister, brother, etc. We discussed what kind of clothes
they should wear because of the climate, age of the person, position in
the community, wealth, etc.
~ Cut out along the dotted lines.
~ To make finger puppets (your second and third fingers do the walking):
tape a rubber band so that it is parallel to and 1" fi om the bottom of the
puppet. Insert your finger, so the fingers tips are feet.
or
~ To make rod puppets: Tape the puppet to a stick (like a straw, chopstick,
or pencil) or a spoon.
2. Read the story ahead of time to very young children. I urge you to
read this script to your children several times before the actual Seder.
Unlike adults, children enjoy the repetition -- it umkes the story their
friend and they love to make sure it goes as they thought. In the same
vein, leave the children s Haggadah on the bookshelf with the rest of your
child s books for use any time during the year -- remember the book is a
friend.
3. Teach the songs in the month ahead. They aren t hard to learn and
they tell the story of the holiday. Even non-readers will be able to
participate in the Seder by singing.
PREPARATION OF THE CEREMONIAL FOODS FOR THE SEDER
These are the traditional ceremonial foods in a Seder. You may choose to
prepare these a day or two ahead so that you have only the preparation of
the meal for the day of the Seder. You will need a large ceremonial Seder
plate to display one each of: roasted lamb bone, egg, bitter herbs,
charoset, greens, and salt water.
