From School Library Journal Two holiday titles written in rhyming texts of two lines per page introduce current holiday customs in the traditional context of extended family celebrations. Nerlove uses a broad range of colors to create a warm feeling in her watercolor and ink illustrations. Christmas first focuses on a young girl and her family as they prepare for Christmas Day with gifts, cookies, and tree decorations, awaiting Santa's arrival. The family's attendance at Christmas church services creates the segue into a brief glimpse of the first Christmas. The visual interpretation of the brief historical overview depicts all characters as white Anglo-Saxons, detracting from its accuracy and authenticity. Thanksgiving begins with a brief look at the first Thanksgiving leading into the Thanksgiving Day celebration of a single parent and her son at Grandma's house. Gibbons' Thanksgiving Day (1983) and Christmas Time (1982, both Holiday) present parallel content for a similar age range in a more straightforward manner. --Janie Schomberg, Leal Elementary School, Urbana, ILCopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. Card catalog description A rhyming text describes a girl and her family as they prepare for Christmas, celebrate the birth of Jesus at a church services, and have a wonderful dinner with other relatives.
