From School Library Journal Grade 10 Up Holography, a technique for creating three-dimensional images, may indeed seem like magic, but as readers tackle this book, they may also wish there were an equally magical route to understanding it. Heckman's presentation is carefully written, well-organized, and complete, but the concept is not simple. After a brief introduction describing some of the unique properties of holograms, the author reviews the physics necessary for comprehension of holograms from a technical viewpoint. Emphasis is on optics and the laser technology, which has raised holography from a neat laboratory trick to a sophisticated tool. Material is accurate, thoroughly-researched, and illustrated with numerous clarifying black-and-white photographs and diagrams. The text includes good models and analogies to aid in understanding of difficult abstract concepts. Final chapters contain present and future applications of holography in such diverse areas as art, advertising, and engineering. The appendixes contain a review of scientific notation and list places where holograms may be viewed. As a whole, the book is well done, but it may be impossible for students who do not have considerable background in math and physical science courses. A useful addition for libraries frequented by well-motivated students who need information for special projects outside the standard science curriculum. Sue A. Norkeliunas, Arlington Senior High School, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc. Card catalog description Presents a history of the developments in holography from early discoveries in optics to the first hologram of Denis Gabor. Also discusses possible future applications of holography.
