PREFACE
will be divorced and another
s toward divorce in 1973. These
have implications for millions of
adults and children as well as far-reaching financial implications.
These figures reflect almost four times the number of divorces which
took place only ten years ago. Nearly two out of three divorces
today involve children and o~e in every five remarriages ends in
divorce. In the United States 15,000,000 persons now have been
divorced.
American attitudes particularly related to sex and a waning family
life, more flexible divorce laws and the new independence of the
working wife are some of the ~many factors related to increased
divorce. The most divorce prone group are those individuals who
are now in their 20 s-the post-World War II babies.
Divorce rates are higher in the cities than in rural areas. The
smaller the family income and the lower the education the greater
the likelihood of divorce. Nonwhites get divorced more frequently
than whites.
The financial and emotional implications of divorce can be most
profound. For individuals who do not have the financial base of
some stability, the sudden economic cost of divorce can be almost
staggering. Full understanding of these factors and others can be
of great help to marital counselors in their work with clients at-
tempting to adjust to divorce.
We are in debt to the contributors for without them these ma-
terials could have never been developed. We wish to express our
deepest appreciation to each of them who tolerated our constant
letters, calls, negative and positive criticisms.
RICHARD E. HARDY
JOHN G.
