These stories should both give y0I
some clue as to part of my background and also share some
thing of why and how I became interested in studying faith
development.
Vignette number one: My father is a Methodist minister.
We lived in various towns and communities in western North
Carolina as I was growing up. Just after the war, when I w~
about five, we moved into the mountains in the far westen
part of that state, to a little community called Spruce Pin
where feldspar and mica were mined. During the war thet
community had been quite prosperous because of the big]
demand for those products in wartime production. My fathet~
worked not only in Spruce Pine, but also with missi0n~
churches way out in the mountains in places called Bandanna]~
and Kona. t
As a boy of five or six I loved to go with my father on hill
pastoral calls. Whether talking to merchants and lawyers in~
Spruce Pine, or to "Uncle Pink" Turbeyfield in the cabin back !
in the cove, Dad had a way of relating that seemed genuine,
*All na~ ar~ ~h~ auth~r g u.l~ a~he~,i~p indirated
