Some of the people who worked for or
variety of essential creative functions that I do not know how to express my
appreciation and recognition fully yet concisely. Aidan Kelly, for instance, did
much more than merely a splendid job of editing; he also organized the strategy
and structure of the book.
How do I even begin to thank Dzintar Dravnieks? He deserves some kind of
medal. His devoted work as scientific and technical editor, coordinator, and
research facilitator made me often feel that he was virtually a co-author of this
book.
My feelings about Sebastian Orfali pass beyond gratitude. He did much more
than simply act as publisher. He not only contributed much creative thought and
effort to the shape and structure of the book, but also had to be the master-juggler
walking the tightrope of a very difficult business, solving endless problems as they
came up, and making decisions that ultimately turned disadvantage to advantage (I
pause to multiply all this by the number of other books he has had to deal with
similarly at the same time)-- all this, while maintaining a sense of fairness, con-
sideration, and concern for the needs of the author.
I also want to thank all the people at And/Or Press for their intelligent guidance,
contagious enthusiasm, and persevering energy that brought my initial manuscript
to its ultimate form as a book, particularly: Ryan Garcia, who did the initial
editing; Phil Gardner, for creating graphics, illustrations, and charts; Bonnie
Smetts, for creating the layout and design; as well as Leslie Strauss, Peter Beren,
Linda Gibbs, Bill Alexander, and anyone else whom I may have inadvertently or
through ignorance overlooked. I am also most grateful to Art Quaife al
A. Sperling for the photographs they have contributed to the book.
